CHEC Engineering Consultants, Inc., has evolved into a leading nationwide consulting engineering firm specializing in the fields of pavement design, asphalt concrete materials analysis and construction inspection. As one of the earliest consulting firms dedicated to these disciplines, CHEC's reference list of more than 18 years consists of hundreds of clients from commercial property owners to City and County agencies.

The foundation for the present corporation began in 1976 after Mr. Alan Curtis, President, left the California Transportation (CALTRANS) Research Laboratory to work as a private consultant. In 1983, the company expanded to become Curtis/Herriman Engineering Consultants (CHEC). Under this name, CHEC became recognized as a specialized civil engineering company with unique capabilities in airport and highway pavement design (new and rehabilitation), pavement testing, failure analysis, and asphalt materials consulting.

With the rapid growth of staff and stature in the industry, CHEC has also expanded into more traditional areas of providing contract plans, specifications and administration, construction management, deflection testing, coring and various materials testing.  An affiliated testing laboratory provides a full range of ASTM, AASHTO and CALTRANS tests required for soils, asphalt and concrete.

Since 1973, Alan Curtis, P.E. has been involved in all aspects of pavements. With a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering (CSU, Chico) and graduate studies in pavements (CSU, San Jose), Mr. Curtis has been involved with all phases of pavement management including research and analysis, design, and the teaching of government and private infrastructure managers.

As an expert in this field, Mr. Curtis built CHEC Engineering Consultants, Inc. into a leading Nationwide firm in pavement management and design techniques of pavements. He teaches extension classes for over five universities including:
